You take the standard deduction if you are unable to file a schedule-A.
Take the standard deduction when all your allowed deductions is less the standard deduction for the way you file and the year you file.
If you file MFS, both take the standard deduction, or both itemize even if less than the standard deduction. One spouse can not itemize if the other spouse takes the standard deduction!
Married persons who live apart and have one or more of their children living with them, provide >50% of their support can file Head of Household. Read More about HH.
